Memorial Day, a holiday to honor people who have died in service of the country, has become synonymous with two other important activities – shopping and hitting the beach.
From coast to coast people will be heading out in the sun, probably for the first time this year, to watch parades, air shows, barbecue and relax – all while being a few feet from a cooling swim in the sea, lake or ocean.
The unofficial start of the summer, which falls on May 30 this year, is a great excuse for a road trip to a place you have never seen before.
The beaches on this list have different parties (whether it's parades, dance festivals or yacht shows); provide various forms of entertainment from water sports to more adventurous kinds; and have huge or small crowds, depending on what you're looking for.
1. Virginia Beach
Virginia Beach, the 14 miles where the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean connect, is a popular Memorial Day weekend destination, especially for families, because the number of activities is astounding. Take a picture with the iconic King Neptune statue, walk down the 3-mile boardwalk connecting you to other beaches, or try your luck fishing and kayaking off the coast. 2. Waimea Bay Beach, Hawaii
Want to jump off a scary cliff that is about 18 feet high into the water? Head to Waimea Bay, located on Oahu's North Shore. 5. North Avenue Beach, Chicago
North Avenue Beach in Chicago near Lincoln Park is located on the shores of Lake Michigan. The beach is one of the most popular destinations for residents every time the weather is nice. It has more than 50 designated volleyball courts and a bike path. The beach is so huge; people outline a football field to play the game. 6. Port Aransas Pier, Texas

For a more relaxed way to experience the coast, try stand up paddle boarding. Watch wild horses race on the shores of Shackleford Banks or climb nearby Cape Lookout Lighthouse. The coast is an 85-mile stretch that extends from the Cape Lookout National Seashore and includes 56 miles of protected beaches.
12. Cocoa Beach, Florida
Memorial Day is always special in this city. There is a guest speaker, a flag folding ceremony, a gun salute and a moment of silence. Cocoa Beach is just an hour drive from Orlando and is the place to be because surfing, fishing and learning windsurfing are great options for day activities. 13. Race Point Beach, Massachusetts
