Fitness-Friendly Hotel Chains
Get your fitness fix in private—in your room, no less—so you can exercise whenever the mood strikes. Just book a signature Fitness Room (you'll have to pay slightly extra) at any one of the 100-plus TRYP locations around the world, and your room will come stocked with an exercise machine (like a stationary bike, elliptical machine or treadmill) and complimentary exercise clothing.
Fairmont Hotels and Resorts
Staying fit at Fairmont requires little other than a phone call to the front desk where you can request Fairmont Fit. You'll then get Reebok workout apparel and footwear, an MP3 player pre-loaded with music, and yoga mat and stretch band you can use during your stay. (You have to be a member of the President's Club, which is free. When you register you'll be asked to fill out your apparel sizes so that information is available to Fairmont staff when you call.) Love the fitness gear? You have the option to purchase it. Put that gear to work when you check out a free BMW Cruise Bike, available at Fairmont locations around the world. (President's Club members get priority access.) Or if you're lucky enough to stay at a location that offers this, take an innovative fitness class (fees might apply) like Aerial Yoga at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in Arizona where you use a hammock suspended from the ceiling, or Floating Yoga at the Fairmont Orchid on Hawaii's Big Island where you do yoga on stand-up paddleboards.
Affinia Hotels
This boutique chain with locations in New York City and Washington, D.C. takes bike-friendliness to the next level. Not only do three Manhattan locations offer complimentary use of custom-made Affinia bikes, complete with helmet, lock and list of bike parking, but they also offer the services of a "bike counselor" who leads guests on guided city bike tours. On top of that, all Affinia locations offer free "experience kits" upon request, including a fitness kit (with yoga mat, stretching blocks, workout DVDS and more) and walking tour kit (with pre-loaded iPod Nano or Shuffle, city walking guide, pedometer and more). Guests at the Affinia Dumont also have access to an in-house nutritionist.
EVEN Hotels
It takes motivation—and the right environment—to maintain that fitness regime on the road. Enter EVEN Hotels, a wellness lifestyle hotel which will open its first four properties (two in New York City and one each in Maryland and Connecticut) in early 2014. While you'll find nutritionally loaded menus and rooms designed with sleep in mind, you'll also find a plethora of fitness options. All of the locations will feature a gym as well as a "flex room" with TV- and staff-led classes. In-room equipment like yoga mats, foam rollers and exercise balls will be standard in every room, and a "wellness wall" will list information about wellness options in and near the hotel, workout guides and staff recommendations for staying healthy on the road.
Gansevoort Hotel Group
When you stay at one of Gansevoort's three properties (two in New York City and one in Turks and Caicos), you'll have access to creative fitness classes at Exhale Mind Body Spa, a powerhouse in the fitness industry and creator of a line of DVDs for home exercisers. Class options include core fusion barre, core fusion cardio, core fusion sports and core fusion yoga in the spa's fitness studios. Although you'll have to pay for classes, you'll get a $10 break on each one. For those staying in Turks and Caicos, you can also take advantage of the Get Fit hotel package, which includes core fusion classes in a beachfront, open-air pavilion, fusion massage, signature spa drink and healthy breakfast buffet and fresh fish daily (rates start at $500/nightly based on double occupancy and four-night minimum stay).
Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants
When it comes to keeping guests fit, Kimpton delivers like no other. The boutique hotel company stocks yoga mats in all guest rooms to accompany the complimentary 24-hour yoga channel. Go one step further, though, and ask for the free "roll-out" service. A Kimpton staff member will come to your room with flavored water and fresh fruit or a mix of dried fruit and nuts, get your mat ready and turn on the yoga channel. Feel like taking a bike ride or a run? Kimpton has partnered with PUBLIC bikes to offer complimentary bikes for any guest. Or take advantage of the free group runs and power walks offered at select locations. You can even find creative, cutting-edge fitness classes, many for free, at various locations. For instance, at Chicago's Hotel Palomar, take a rooftop Barre Bee Fit class or do rooftop flow yoga at Kimpton's Hotel Solamar in San Diego. Or if you're at 70 Park Avenue Hotel in New York City, check out a free mini iPad loaded with fitness apps and tutorials to create the perfect workout.
Hyatt Hotels and Resorts
It's all about staying fit—literally—when you head to a Hyatt. While the chain's StayFit program does promise state-of-the-art fitness facilities, it also features YogaAway, a system that allows you to "order" a yoga workout from an in-room entertainment unit. Most of the hotels also have a fitness concierge who can help you get workout gear (like swim goggles) and give you maps with designated running and walking routes. Some can even provide GPS watches so you don't have to worry about getting lost when you log an outdoor sweat. Hungry? Choose healthy cuisine from the StayFit menu.
Westin Hotels and Resorts
Few hotels are as serious about fitness as Westin. For starters, you can book a signature WestinWORKOUT room (expect a slight upcharge), which comes with a treadmill or stationary bike, dumbbells, fitness DVDs, resistance bands and stability balls. Feel like exercising with others? Check out the RunWESTIN running program where a running concierge leads guests on scenic runs, usually past the city's iconic landmarks. Or if you want to hit the pavement on your own, you can ask for three-mile and five-mile walking/running routes from the hotel. If you forgot to pack your running shoes or apparel, cough up $5, and you can borrow New Balance running shoes (with disposable insoles) and a variety of New Balance apparel for men and women. And for those who have signed up for a Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, Westin offers VIP marathon packages.
Sheraton Hotels and Resorts
Here's a new twist—and a waist-friendly one at that—on room service: When you call the front desk at a Sheraton, you can ask for the complimentary Gym-In-A-Bag with tools to help you log a good sweat. You'll get a book packed with exercises, mat, resistance band, massage stick and foam roller. Once you have those in your room, flip on the TV and head to the in-room, on-demand fitness videos and online training programs from Core Performance, a company that designs programs for athletes of all levels. And if you have to order room service, Sheraton's Color Your Plate program features meals generally under 500 calories with a minimum of three colors from fruits and veggies, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats.
Element Hotels
Pedal off those vacation calories when you stay at Starwood's eco-wise brand. Through a program called Bikes-to-Borrow, you can cruise the local area on a complimentary bike. If Mother Nature isn't cooperating, head to the fitness center where you'll find pedal-powered charging stations, allowing you to charge your electronic devices with your own sweat.
Trump Hotel Collection
Call it a luxurious way to maintain your fitness. Thanks to Trump's new wellness program, you can request equipment like yoga mats, stretch bands and light weights for use in your room. Forgot your workout gear? Trump has you covered, offering Under Armour footwear and apparel, even a pre-loaded iPod Shuffle. (Become a member of Trump Card Privileges Program, which is free to join, and your wellness experience will be customized, meaning that the iPod could come with some of your favorite music.) Or just ask for maps of local running or walking routes. In-room menus have also been revamped through the wellness program to provide healthy (including vegan, gluten-free and organic) selections.
Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts
This luxury brand stands out not so much because of companywide fitness offerings—most Four Seasons have state-of-the-art gyms with classes and personal trainers—but because of individual touches at its different locations. If you're in Scottsdale, Ariz., take advantage of guided hikes to nearby Pinnacle Peak (pictured). If you're visiting Whistler, B.C. for the Ironman Canada, use the free bike washing stations, tuning kits and storage. (Four Seasons Whistler also has a ski concierge.) Don't have time to hit the gym in Beverly Hills? Use the custom personal training app on your in-room iPad. Going for a morning run in Boston? Borrow workout clothes, running shoes and a jogging map on your way out, and get a towel and water when you return. In fact, several Four Seasons hotels will lend you workout clothes, so you don't have to worry about what do with those sweaty socks while traveling.
