Dog Breaks Human Long-Jump Record
If you're looking for the most athletic dog to take on the trails, we have a suggestion.
Belgian malinois are known as an active, friendly and energetic breed, and one of their ranks just took canine athleticism to a new level.
Her name is Vhoebe and she recently broke the record for longest jump in the 15th Annual Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge National Finals in Gray Summit, Missouri. With that one solid leap, she also broke the human long jump record (29 feet, four-and-a-half inches) by more than two-and-a-half feet. It was set by American track-and-field star Mike Powell in Tokyo in 1991.
In dog-terms, the long-jump event is known as a "diving dog" competition. Dogs run toward a ramp and jump into a pool of water. They are lured by a toy that a trainer throws over the pool. Below, you can check out the video of Vhoebe breaking a past world record. We particularly like the snow-motion recaps.
Vhoebe's owner, Lisa Ann Strum, attributes her dog's success to the training sessions Vhoebe has done five-to-six times per week since 2009.
