American Airlines Added A New Route To A Stunning And Trendy Destination In Mexico

Travelers looking for their next beach escape have a new direct route to check out. American Airlines has officially added Puerto Escondido, Mexico, to its service map, making it even easier for U.S. passengers to access one of Mexico's most underrated tourist destinations. Starting December 3, 2025, the airline will operate nonstop flights twice a week between Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM). The new route running on Wednesdays and Saturdays is the 30th Mexican destination for the airline. Tickets became available on April 14.

"Puerto Escondido is quickly becoming a top destination for travelers in search of tropical and relaxing getaways, and we are confident that our new service from Dallas-Fort Worth will offer our customers the opportunity to experience a unique part of Mexico," said American Airlines executive José A. Freig in a press release. And it's no wonder — Puerto Escondido was listed No. 1 on Airbnb U.K.'s Top 20 Places to Visit in 2025, drawing even more attention to this surfing paradise.

To travel with a boost of luxury, passengers can even upgrade to a premium cabin on the American Airlines route to Puerto Escondido. American Airlines is investing big in Mexico, already adding three additional routes to Tijuana, Tulum, and Veracruz to the roster in 2024. So whether you're looking for a weekend getaway or a longer vacation, there's a ton of direct routes to iconic Mexican destinations to choose from.

Add Mexico's Puerto Escondido to your bucket-list

Situated along Oaxaca's Pacific coast, Puerto Escondido is Mexico's perfect spot for beginner surfers, and it's long been an if-you-know-you-know spot for travelers seeking a slower, more soulful vibe than crowded Cancún or Cabo. But word is officially out. With its golden beaches, jungle-fringed cliffs, and a growing number of boutique hotels and restaurants, Puerto Escondido is having a moment — and this new American Airlines route just made it even easier to get to.

With some of the prettiest waters in the world, the town is famous for Playa Zicatela, a stretch of beach known for its epic surf breaks and relaxed, bohemian energy. However, this area is best for advanced surfers — beginners should head over to Punta Zicatela at the southern end for calmer waves. Puerto Escondidio's smaller bays, like Playa Carrizalillo and Playa Bacocho, are favorites for swimming and snorkeling. Beginner surfers can also head here for a safer surfing experience as well as lessons for anyone just starting out. Beyond the beach, visitors will find biodiverse mangrove lagoons, local mezcal tasting tours, and traditional Oaxacan cuisine.

Adventure-seekers will love the options for paragliding and skydiving, while nature lovers are spoiled for choice when it comes to activities, from whale-watching tours, swimming with dolphins, sea turtle releases, crocodile sightings, and kayaking through peaceful lagoons. Evenings are best spent watching the sun dip below the horizon and then heading out to witness the stunning bioluminescence that comes alive in the waters after dark. Luckily, despite the recent tourism buzz, Puerto Escondido hasn't yet lost its laid-back charm. It's still got that earthy, small-beach-town vibe, with a community spirit that appeals to backpackers and travelers who love off-the-beaten-path destinations.
