Just An Hour From Portland, Oregon Is A Waterfall Swimming Hole With Cliffs And A Natural Slide

The relatively wet climate found throughout much of the Pacific Northwest guarantees that it's an incredibly verdant place, especially the lands lying west of the volcanic Cascade Range. This region is so moist and misty that it's home to a lush otherworldly rainforest, along with rolling green hills, deep lakes, rivers, streams, and plenty of waterfalls, such as these two cascades known as the "Niagara Falls of Oregon."

Water is the name of the game in this part of the Pacific Northwest, which means that during the summer months — which can reach temperatures of over 90 degrees — people retreat to the valleys and waterways to beat the heat in the cool, pristine flows. One such place is the idyllic Naked Falls.

Situated on the Washougal River in southern Washington state, this cataract and swimming hole is only about hour from the city of Portland, making it an ideal summer daytime retreat. Named for the sunbathers who once basked at the site au natural, the river enthusiasts who come to the falls these days are much more likely to keep their swimsuits on, which means the only naked thing you're likely to encounter is nature itself.

Let loose in a pristine, emerald river

The Washougal River flows 33 miles down from the foothills of the Cascades before emptying into the mighty Columbia River. The name Washougal means "rushing water" in native Chinook, and the river is known for its numerous waterfalls. It's a very popular spot for anglers, swimmers, and boaters, though the river is closed to all motorized watercraft traffic.

Naked Falls sit on private land that up until recently was closed to the public. It's now opened back up, though for access you need to pay a day-use fee that helps maintain the site. While many people come to swim and bask on the rocks overlooking the water, one of the main attractions is the 30 foot-high cliff, where thrill-seekers can jump off into the cold, deep pool below.

The Washougal River's flow varies greatly depending on the season. In the rainy winter, the river turns into a fast-flowing torrent, and Naked Falls is at its fullest. However, during the warm summer months — when most people visit the falls — the cascades are much gentler. The lower water volume also means that much of the bedrock becomes exposed, turning parts of it into natural stone slides. These unsubmerged rocks are also perfect spots to linger over a picnic or just relax in the sunlight to the sound of placidly-flowing water.

Explore one of North America's great gorges

The Washougal River empties into the Columbia River Gorge, an 80-mile long and up to 4,000-foot deep canyon that carves a border between Washington and Oregon in the Cascade Range. This National Scenic Area is a gorgeous, natural playground that can be explored from both the Washington and Oregon sides.

For more fast-flowing cascades, take a drive along this road for some stunning waterfall views, including Multnomah Falls. This arresting, 620-foot drop is one of the nation's highest, and certainly among Oregon's most iconic attractions. While you're in the area, make sure to stop off for a bite or a pint in the laid-back, outdoorsy settlement of Hood River, or head over to the Dalles — a sun-drenched town boasting over 30 wineries that is one of the gorge's best-kept secrets.

After a busy day of discovering the Columbia Gorge's many gems, cross over to the Washington side and soak your worries away at Carson Hot Springs, a hidden and historic resort with restorative waters. After a peaceful night's sleep, head back to Portland, which aside from being known for its innovative food scene, also serves up the best coffee in America.
