This Dazzling Lake Michigan Beach Town Is Full Of Rolling Dunes And Year-Round Adventures

The Great Lakes feature some iconic American cities, both big and small. Many combine beautiful scenery, outdoor activities, and urban environments all in one place. Some of them have huge beaches rivaling those of oceans too. One of the best towns to visit on the Great Lakes for all of these features is the appropriately named Grand Haven in Michigan.

At any time of year, you can take part in plenty of outdoor activities in Grand Haven. All of the city's beaches are wonderful for sports and relaxation during warmer months, but you can also take in breathtaking lake views by strolling along Grand Haven's famous boardwalk. If the sun gets too overbearing, there are plenty of forested areas with varying terrain to explore too. In winter, you can go skiing, sledding, or simply enjoy the town and its nature transforming under snowfall. This city is also a perfect place to add to a scenic Michigan road trip route, thanks to its placement at the start (or end) of the West Michigan Pike historic byway.

Hang out on beaches or get up close to lighthouses

Lakeside relaxation around Grand Haven's beaches dates back to the early 1900s. The beach at Grand Haven State Park is a popular hangout, but is spacious enough to still be relaxing. Families can enjoy the playground and volleyball courts all summer. In case you forgot to pack anything, the Beach Shop has all the supplies you'll need for a beach day, plus souvenirs. Within the park, head to where Grand River opens into Lake Michigan to see two lighthouses from the mid-1800s. As you walk along the boardwalk and nearby piers, you'll quickly see just how big they are. The deep blue water makes for a stunning backdrop for these bright red lighthouses too.

Grand Haven City Beach further south offers the same beach activities, but is closer to Overlook Platform. Stairs to this viewpoint are across the street from the parking lot. From here, you can listen to the Lake Michigan water and perhaps see all the way to the lighthouses. Both beaches are close to Bluewater Inn and Suites, which offers large and small rooms with lake views.

Hike among forests and sand dunes in Grand Haven

Keep the sandy adventures going at Kitchel-Lindquist Dunes Preserve. The sand dunes here are uniquely mixed in with the forests, providing the park's visitors with plenty of hiking trails. The Kitchel Lindquist Dunes Preserve Loop takes you through six different ecosystems in just one two-and-a-half mile trail. With minimal elevation gain, this trail is perfect for hikers of all experience levels. Slightly south of Grand Haven is Rosy Mound Natural Area, featuring more dunes, but with towering trees reaching straight up to the sky and slightly more advanced hiking trails. However, you'll be rewarded with wide, seemingly untouched views of Lake Michigan.

During colder months, Grand Haven turns into a winter wonderland, especially at Mulligan's Hollow. Across six slope options, this locally owned nonprofit caters to all skill levels, making it great for families. Parents even receive free admission. Check the event calendar for sledding and freestyle trick competitions. If you don't want to participate, you might have just as much fun as a spectator. There are also adults-only events and rental equipment of all sizes.
