A Bustling Bohemian Neighborhood In Istanbul Is The Perfect Area For First-Time Visitors

Very few cities can boast that they span two different continents. Stretching across both Asia and Europe, Istanbul's impressive expanse spreads over 39 districts; it's a megacity that could give you reason to sink at least two hours into a Google wormhole on where to stay for your first visit. While there are a ton of cool neighborhoods in which to base your exploration, one vibrant district stands out for visitors who want to be in the central heart of this intriguing city. Beyoğlu is a dreamy, bustling, and fascinating district straight out of ancient history. 

A beautiful labyrinth of stacked staircases, hills, and winding cobblestone streets, Beyoğlu is the ancient world's realization of the game Chutes and Ladders. Pristinely preserved historical monuments, colorful trade stores, funky coffee shops, and aromatic restaurants are layered like dominoes in an artistically cohesive way that defies architectural sense (and maybe gravity). It is the perfect neighborhood if this is your first time experiencing Istanbul. Set high atop a hill, Beyoğlu has the vertical geographical advantage of granting great views of the city and the Strait of Bosphorus. In terms of history and culture, the area strikes the perfect balance of playing host to many travelers but not losing its local authenticity. It is not infiltrated by the Western influences you might imagine (i.e., you won't see tons of McDonald's storefronts ruining the vibes)! Many of the travelers staying in Beyoğlu are actually Turkish, visiting from different parts of the country. Five times throughout the day, the Ezan, or call to prayer, is amplified throughout the streets, lending a hauntingly beautiful aura as you explore. As you browse the fun shops (one of the best things to do here), you will have the heartwarming experience of shop owners graciously offering you hot, homemade cups of tea. They will ask you questions and even sit with you at times to sip the tea! Locals are curious and respectful, and you will enjoy your chats with them.

Be sure to hop on a tramway to see the sights by rail when your feet need a break, although exploring by foot is by far the best way to see Istanbul. Head to Taksim Square, the modern epicenter of Beyoğlu, and while away an afternoon at one of several great museums.

Beyoğlu is truly bursting at the seams with life. From live music to quaint Turkish cafes to yowling cats to a never-ending bar scene, good energy is everywhere. Some of Istanbul's most memorable restaurants, nightlife spots, and shops are located right here! İstiklâl Caddesi is a famous pedestrian boulevard that you could spend many hours exploring. For those who value a moment alone, when you climb to your hotel roof or dip into a side street to pet cats who look like they just left the groomer's, you can discover a quiet tranquility that will pleasantly surprise you. Due to Beyoğlu's popularity among international visitors, it is perhaps not the cheapest area out of all of Istanbul's neighborhoods, but it is still quite affordable. Expect hidden gems around every corner. Look twice down the same street, and you'll probably find something you didn't the first time! You can't be disappointed when exploring this fascinating part of Istanbul.
