The index, established in 2006, is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and ongoing research from Henley & Partners. It ranks 199 passports and assesses their level of global mobility by considering visa-free, visa-on-arrival, and electronic travel authorization (eTA) agreements. 

As of 2025, the Canadian passport ranks seventh globally, providing visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 188 destinations. This marks a historic moment, as Canada's Henley Passport Index ranking has surpassed the United States for the first time. The U.S., which scored higher in past rankings, fell to ninth place, offering access to 186 destinations. The top passport in 2025 belongs to Singapore, with visa-free access to 195 out of 227 possible destinations, followed closely by Japan with 193. At the lower end of the spectrum, Afghanistan ranks last, allowing access to only 26 nations. 

The strength of a passport is closely linked to factors such as a country's diplomatic relationships, economic stability, and security risks. Countries with high Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and political stability tend to have stronger passports, allowing their citizens greater mobility. Canada's steady rise in the rankings over the past decade might reflect its growing international influence. The Canadian passport also has a mobility score (a metric that calculates total travel access) of 173, covering 87% of the world. The ability to travel freely benefits Canadian citizens by simplifying travel logistics, encouraging global business opportunities, and enhancing cultural exchange.

Beyond its strong ranking, the Canadian passport has also undergone a major transformation to enhance its security. In May 2023, Canada introduced a redesigned passport with new visual elements and advanced anti-fraud measures to protect against counterfeiting. The exterior of the new passport has been updated to a sleek, modern design. The word "Canada" appears in the top right corner, with "passport" written in both English and French underneath. A yellow maple leaf outline sits above the Royal Coat of Arms of Canada, symbolizing national identity. The back cover features an intricate black and blue maple leaf pattern with smaller red maple leaves integrated into the design. 

Inside, the personal information page has been upgraded with enhanced security features. One of the most notable is a red maple leaf that disappears when exposed to heat. Additionally, a metallic deer and snowflake image shifts color under different lighting conditions. These features make it significantly harder to forge or manipulate the document. 

The visa pages now showcase seasonal artwork that changes under ultraviolet light, adding an extra layer of security. These pages include iconic Canadian heritage imagery, such as children playing near ponds and bears wandering through forests. The incorporation of these elements celebrates Canada's natural beauty while reinforcing security measures. The Canadian passport's 2023 enhancements help make it one of the most secure and visually distinctive travel documents in the world, whilst being one of the most powerful passports as well.
