Iowa's Hidden 'Little Grand Canyon' Is The Midwest's Best-Kept Hiking Secret
If the United States is known for one thing (aside from fantastic BBQ), it's stunning outdoor destinations. Specifically, its incredible ravines such as those found in Zion National Park or the ever-popular Grand Canyon. The problem with these destinations is that they are so well-known that each year they become overcrowded with tourists, making it hard to feel as though you are having a one-with-nature experience. Luckily for those seeking to explore a near-unknown hiking destination similar in beauty to the Grand Canyon, the perhaps unexpected state of Iowa has you covered. Those familiar with hikes in Iowa probably know of Preparation Canyon State Park, an outdoor space with over 344 acres of natural beauty. However, beyond the state's better-known areas lies an underrated outdoor playground with stunning cliffside views and interesting hiking trails.
Sitting just 30 minutes from Dubuque in the Whitewater Canyon Wildlife area is the "Little Grand Canyon" of Iowa — which gets its name due to its whopping 200-foot crevice; the last remnants of a once mighty cave system some 21,000 years old. The area is an under-the-radar location due to it originally being privately owned land. The state eventually purchased Whitewater Canyon and the Lost Canyon in the early 2000s, giving the gorgeous nature reserve back to the public. The stunning foliage is made up of oak and maple trees, making the area a fabulous place to come and see the leaves change color in the fall. Winter brings a quiet, serene beauty — with frozen waterfalls, icy streams, and trails dusted in snow. Beautiful year-round, this underrated wildlife area in Iowa makes for the perfect escape into nature.
Explore the Lost Canyon
Covering an area of 562 acres, the Lost Canyon and Whitewater Canyon Wildlife Area are fantastic places to spend an afternoon outdoors. For hikers, there are six different trails to choose from, each with a different level of difficulty. For those seeking a trail with a bit of adventure, try the Lost Canyon and Valley of 13 Caves Loop. This 2.4-mile trek takes visitors on an hour-long walk past the canyon overlook, prairies, and forests, and on an exploration of different caves. Check out the Overlook Trail for even more beauty, which gives visitors a great view of Whitewater Canyon.
All of the hikes offer unexpected views, from stunning rock overhangs, to stream beds, and winding pathways carved by ancient glacial forces. You may even find a little bat friend or interesting ice formations in the interior of one of the caves. With a multitude of hiking excursions, the fun never seems to run out in the Whitewater Canyon Wildlife area. Hiking isn't the only activity the area offers. Visitors can enjoy fishing, hunting, different flora and fauna, and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter months. The area is home to around 147 bird species as well, making it one of the best places in the U.S. for birdwatchers to come and enjoy a day spent outside.

Winter is a great time to visit, as nearby Sundown Mountain Resort has 21 runs for ski lovers to enjoy. For history and outdoor enthusiasts, a visit to the Mines of Spain State Recreation Area is a must. It's a National Historical Landmark that was once the location for lead mining until after the Civil War. The recreation area offers great river views, trails to walk along, and an opportunity to learn a bit of history.
