One Of China's Ancient Capitals Is A Historic Treasure With Stunning Scenic Views

In the Henan Province of China, you'll find the city of Kaifeng. What was once the capital city of China's historic Song Dynasty and the one-time capital of the entire province, Kaifeng was once the world's most populated city. In fact, Kaifeng was one of the first major trade and industry hubs in the country thanks to its canal system, and evidence of this city's former glory days still exists in its impressive, regal architecture. This can be noted in its famous ancient attractions such as the Dragon Pavilion, the Iron Pagoda, and the Daxiangguo Temple, one of the most famous temples in China. All these historical and cultural relics exemplify the might of the ancient Chinese dynasties and make for excellent places to visit in the city.

Today, Kaifeng's industries have changed, but the city has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in China due to its historical and cultural significance. With beautiful and fascinating historical sites, and a riverfront park modeled after the Song Period, a trip to Kaifeng is a trip through time. So brush up on some Chinese words and phrases, book your airline ticket, pack something red for good luck, and get ready to be transported to another era.

A voyage to China's ancient capital in Kaifeng

Sitting on the west side of Dragon Pavilion Lake is Millennium City Park, perhaps Kaifeng's most exciting attraction –– a historical amusement park modeled on a famous scroll painting by Zhang Zeduan. The theme park transports visitors to the days of the Song Dynasty. This huge attraction spans 98 acres including 50 ancient-style boats on the river and ancient-themed antique markets, royal gardens, and more. Numerous family-friendly activities take place at Millennium City Park, including historic skits, horseracing, magic shows, and fire spurting, to name a few. From March to November, nightly light shows see the park transform into a magical explosion of high-tech lighting and visual effects. Tickets to enter the park cost 100 Chinese yuan (about $14) and start at 199 Chinese yuan (over $27) for the light show which begins at 8 p.m.

Kaifeng's Chrysanthemum Flower Fair, which has been a tradition since the days of the Song Dynasty, is an annual tradition that takes place in the city in October and November. Each year, Dragon Pavilion Park erupts in a cascade of colors, with over 1,000 types of chrysanthemums on display. This time of year is probably the best time to visit Kaifeng as well since you'll be greeted by a moderate climate that isn't too hot or humid.

A taste of Henan Province in Kaifeng

Another great place to learn about and appreciate the history of Kaifeng is the Kaifeng Museum. Featuring four exhibition halls, the museum houses 80,000 cultural relics, including jade, bronze, and ceramic artifacts. Kaifeng's rich history can further be explored at the Greater Xiangguo Temple, one of the most famous Buddhist temples in all of China, which was restored in 1992 but has been impressively standing since its original construction in the 6th century. Xiangguo was once a major meeting place for artists and musicians, with musical performances often taking place on its grounds. If you're lucky, your visit may coincide with a classical performance by the Buddhist orchestra.

While in Kaifeng, one should try traditional Henan Cuisine, or Yucuisine, known in China as one of its oldest culinary traditions. Kaifeng Night Market in Gulou Square is a bustling hub, known throughout the country as one of the best places to get a late-night snack or even do a food tour. In general, Kaifeng is famed for its excellent eats, making it a true foodie paradise. Dishes to look out for here are Kaifeng "peony swallow dish," fried bean curd noodles, and xiao long bao (which is a style of bao in Kaifeng). Those with more of an adventurous palette can try the fried cicada. With this array of attractions, Kaifeng is the ultimate Chinese destination for history buffs and foodies alike. Of course, before you go, be sure to educate yourself on things that tourists should never do in China.
