One Of The US' Happiest Towns Is A Little-Known Texas Gem With Shops And Outdoor Fun
The Texas Hill Country is one of the most sought-after travel destinations in the state. Thanks to its distinct karst topography, the region is full of caves, caverns, springs, and rugged limestone rock formations –– giving the area a look all its own. Not to mention, the Texas Hill Country is a historically rich blend of cultures, including German and Spanish, creating one uniquely Texan atmosphere that draws travelers from all over the world.
Lots of visitors come to the Texas Hill Country to imbibe in one of the best U.S. cities for wine tasting, cut a rug in Gruene, or listen to live music in Austin. Some might go tubing and fishing on the Guadalupe River. Or, they're there to get their fill of fascinating history and excellent food in San Antonio. But just about 30 miles north of the Alamo City is a little town called Boerne, which has been recognized as one of the happiest towns in the United States (via House Beautiful). Excellent shopping and dining in Boerne, Texas
With just shy of 18,000 residents, according to the 2020 census, Boerne has that small-town feel while still having easy access to the big cities of San Antonio and Austin. Plus it has its very own award-winning shopping district known as the "Hill Country Mile" that offers everything from high-end boutiques to art galleries to fine dining. The shopping district won awards for having the Best Small Market Social Media Account from the 2023 Texas Travel Awards, and three individual businesses received top honors from the 2024 Texas Travel Awards.
Have a handcrafted house beer and a locally-sourced lunch on the patio at Cibolo Creek Brewing Co., or enjoy a romantic date night at famed Peggy's on the Green in the historic Kendall Inn, created by San Antonio Chef Mark Bohanan. Boerne also has many opportunities to explore nature
Boerne's idyllic location is just one more reason residents love it there. In Boerne, you're close to much of the natural beauty that the Hill Country is known for. Just on the outskirts of town on Cibolo Creek, you'll find Cibolo Nature Center, where you can wander 6 miles of trails, wade in the creek, stroll through a native prairie, or explore the historic Herff Farm.
Drive another 15 to 20 minutes to Cascade Caverns. The caves officially opened to the public in 1932, but people have been living in and visiting the area sine the 18th century. Daily tours of the upper cave happen every hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are about $20 for visitors over 12 and about $15 for children between 4 and 11 years old. About 11 miles northeast of town, there's another popular underground attraction referred to as the Cave Without A Name. This mysterious cavern is open for tours daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Labor Day to Memorial Day, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from after Memorial Day to before Labor Day. The company requires that you call ahead for reservations. Visitors 13 and up are $22 and children 6 through 12 are just $11 to enter, but all children under 6 get in for free.
