The Fairytale Village In France That Inspired 'Beauty And The Beast' Is A Storybook Escape

A tale as old as time: Someone tells you to visit this or that location because it inspired a film. How many towns can actually be the blueprint for one film? In this case, "Beauty and the Beast" is said to have been influenced by several towns in France, including Riquewihr, Colmar, and Ribeauvillé. Unfortunately, those of you who want to learn more about these towns will have to use Google, because today's topic of conversation is the picturesque French village of Eguisheim.

"Little town, it's a quiet village" – with only around 1,735 residents!  What Eguisheim lacks in population, it makes up for in beauty. In fact, in 2003, it was listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France. The history of this tiny village is reflected in its well-maintained architecture. A beautiful mix of French and German influences can be seen in the colorful homes dotting the cobbled streets. The medieval town features fountains, castles, and a church dating back to the 13th century. Located a short distance from Colmar, Eguisheim lies along the 105-mile Alsace Wine Route. Visitors to this charming little village will be transported to a fairytale-like setting, where a story lies behind every corner.

A visit to fairytale castles

If you step foot into a fairytale, castles must be present, right? In Eguisheim, there are five in the surrounding area! Over a thousand years old, these medieval ruins are bordered by beautiful vineyards and verdant forests. The names of the first three castles will depend on who you speak to. Some call them the 'three castles of Eguisheim,' while others call them the 'three castles of Husseren-les-Châteaux,' a settlement closer to the castles than Eguisheim. No matter the name, it's interesting that they are all grouped, as despite their appearances, each tower was constructed at different times.

Although not as romantic as the castle in "Beauty and the Beast," each of the three towers has a story. In the center of the grouping is the oldest, Wahlenbourg which dates back as far as 1006, when the castle was constructed at the request of Hugues IV, the Count of Eguisheim. At the northernmost corner lies the remains of Dagsbourg, built in 1144, and the last tower, Weckmund. These three towers once formed a single castle but were gradually destroyed throughout the years. Visitors today can expect to see three crumbling towers and some spectacular vineyard views.

While these must-see castles are more well known, further down the road, visitors can see the better-preserved Château du Hohlandsbourg and the Château of Pflixbourg. Access to the parking lot is via Route des Cinq Châteaux from Husseren-les-Châteaux. A little over half a mile down the road, park in the lot, and walk about 20 minutes until you reach the ruins.

A day in Eguisheim

Although a small town, Eguisheim still has many enjoyable locations for visitors to experience. A one or two-hour tour should be enough to see the village. It was uniquely built in a circular layout, so no matter where you turn, you'll always end up back at your point of origin. At the center of Eguisheim is a castle known as Château-Bas d'Eguisheim or St. Leon Castle, which still looks much like it did in the 16th century. Toward the village center is Church Saints Peter and Paul, its bell tower one of the only remaining original pieces from 1220. At St. Leo Chapel, visitors will find relics of Pope St. Leo IX and a beautiful Renaissance fountain with his statue atop it. Begin your walk at Rue du Rempart-Sud, and continue along Rue du Rempart-Nord.

A visit to Eguisheim is beautiful year-round. A trip in spring or summer promises warm weather, while the colder months bring Eguisheim's quaint Christmas market and invite travelers to explore French winter bucket list destinations. While many parts of the Alsace region can be seen by using public transportation, the easiest way to reach smaller villages is by car. Take a stroll, try some local Alsace wine, and enjoy the beauty that is Eguisheim. Who knows, maybe you'll find a beast who's a prince! Probably best to get to know them first before planting a true love's kiss.
