Travelers Can Apply For Passports Faster At These Special Fairs
Applying for a passport is one of the most tedious and frustrating tasks you can do, but it is a nonnegotiable requirement if you want to live out your travel dreams. This is not a task that you want to put off, as it can take up to six weeks (not including mailing time) after submitting your application for your passport to be processed and arrive. The last thing you want is to book an exciting trip only to realize your passport won't arrive in time — so it's best to get ahead while you can. But if you do find yourself in this sticky situation and you've never had a passport before, one of the fastest ways you can get a new passport in time for your travels is by attending a special passport fair hosted by the U.S. Department of State (DOS).
These fairs are in-person events that take place, often on weekends and in early evenings, in multiple states across the country at various times throughout the year. They are designed to provide a streamlined, personalized process for first-time applicants and children under the age of 16 — who are required to apply for their document in person. The DOS recently revealed new fair dates for February through April, 2025. These passport fairs are usually held in public places, such as libraries or community centers. To find a passport fair near you, visit the State Department's website.
What to expect at a passport fair
There are plenty of benefits to attending a passport fair if you're a first-time applicant or if you need to get a passport for a young child. Because the fairs are held on evenings and weekends, you don't need to worry about missing work only to sit for hours in a government building. Though some locations do require appointments, others accept walk-ins, allowing you to stop by whenever you like — and at times that may be more convenient for you. Once it's your turn, an onsite assistant will walk you through the application process and be available to answer any questions you may have.
Before you go to the fair, make sure you have all your required documents neatly organized, including proof of citizenship, a valid ID, and a good passport photo that follows all the requirements. Once you've submitted your application, it will take about four to six weeks, sometimes longer, for your passport to arrive. If you need it sooner, you have the option to pay $60 for expedited service, and you'll have your passport in about two to three weeks. If you don't see fairs in your area or if you're unavailable during the scheduled dates, don't panic. The State Department adds new dates from time to time, so check the website regularly.
