The Little-Known, Idyllic Island That Must Be Greece's Prettiest For A Serene Beach Getaway

There's no place in the world like Greece. What other place in the world has contributed so much to the rise of Western civilization while maintaining a constellation of beautiful islands you can use as beach getaways? Greece actually boasts over 6,000 (!) islands, with just over 200 of them inhabited, meaning you have plenty of options for an unforgettable getaway. However, of all of Greece's islands, one stands out for its beauty and serenity: Samos.

With its beautiful waterfalls and beaches, Samos sits in the North Aegean region alongside other island beauties like Lesbos and Chíos. Samos is steeped in Greek mythology. Hera, the goddess of marriage and family, was believed to have been born in Samos, making it an incredibly beautiful and nerdy place to pop the big question to your loved one. If you're looking for a spot away from the bustling streets of Athens, the beaches, mountains, and caves of Samos await. From monasteries to libraries and museums to restaurants, you won't want to leave this charmed island.

The beaches of Samos

Getting to Samos isn't difficult, as there are a number of options via ferry or plane to visit the island. Once there, you'll want to drop your bags off as soon as possible so that you can hit the beach. Among the several must-see beaches on Samos is Psili Ammos, a sandy and tranquil spot just south of Vathy, the capital of the island. Set up a towel, bring some snacks, and contemplate life like the ancient Greeks did while staring out at the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean.

Elsewhere on the island is Lemonakia Beach, another secluded spot where you can enjoy some well-deserved privacy. Lemonakia is considered one of the more beautiful beaches on the island and is covered in pebbles by its turquoise waters, so make sure to pack some comfortable shoes! If this is your spot for the day, beach beds and umbrellas are available for rental. Yet another beach worth checking out is Livadaki, where — if you're able to make it past a dirt road — you can have a beach and a bar (mostly) to yourself. Imagine that!

History, waterfalls and caves on Samos

One of the most exceptional natural features of Samos is arguably the waterfalls of Potami. In the summer months, hundreds of visitors flock towards Potami Beach to get to the waterfalls, which are found through an enchanting forest path. The icy crystal-clear waters of these falls are perfect for bathing and offer a quieter, more serene swimming experience than the nearby Potami Beach. This is a great trip for hikers and nature lovers; guided hikes are also available.

Samos has also played a significant part in history as the refuge and home of Pythagoras. The story goes that Pythagoras fled to a cave system in the mountainous region while being persecuted by the famous tyrant Polycrates. Today, most of these caves are open to the public, including Pythagoras' temporary home and classroom, where you can only imagine one of our most historically significant mathematicians teaching. The caves are at the foot of Mount Kerkis, about 2 miles from Kampos village. While in the area, you can also visit the nearby beach of Kampos, which overlooks Turkey. With all this and more to explore, Samos is undoubtedly a prime spot for that serene Greek beach getaway.
