One Of Austria's Cleanest Lakes Is Surrounded With Alpine Beauty For A Calm Countryside Escape

With its stunning Alpine landscapes, pristine lakes, and charming countryside retreats, Austria is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts looking to unwind and explore. Whether you're all about ticking off stunning trails from your hiking bucket list or kicking back with a good book by crystal-clear waters, the picturesque European country has a little something for every type of traveler to enjoy.

One of these dream-like destinations is Lake Fuschl (or Fuschlsee in German). Located roughly 13 miles east of Salzburg, the lake is easily considered one of Austria's most unspoiled natural treasures in the Salzkammergut region. A peaceful escape that's both serene and easily accessible, Lake Fuschl has managed to stay true to its rural and authentic charm. Plus, with a shoreline that's still relatively underdeveloped, the spot has established itself as a much quieter retreat in the heart of Austria's popular Lake District.

Stretching for about 2.5 miles and featuring four public beaches, the lake offers year-round activities — from swimming and sailing in the summer to ice skating in the winter months. Better yet, its waters are actually so clean that they meet drinking water standards — which officially makes it the clearest lake in the province.

Enjoy summer on the shores of Lake Fuschl

Lake Fuschl truly comes alive during the summer months, with plenty of ways for visitors to enjoy the water. From setting up camp at one of the beaches to enjoying a refreshing dip or gliding across the lake's calm surface on a stand-up paddleboard, there's no shortage of ways to enjoy the warm days under the sun. And while motorboats aren't allowed on the lake — locals are all about keeping things peaceful — there are electric boats and wooden barges available for rent, so you can still cruise along.

Outside of the water, the area around the lake offers just as much to do. For starters, there's the walking trail that encircles the entire shoreline. A relatively easy, well-marked, and flat 7-mile loop, the path is ideal for families and travelers with pets looking to enjoy some time surrounded by nature. Alternatively, if you're hoping to soak up even more local charm, there's also the 30-minute drive to Gruberalm. A stunning farm high in the Alps serving up food and drink, it's a relatively easy journey to get to Gruberalm: Just head over to Hintersee from the lake, and then follow the road to Lämmerbach for about 2 miles until you reach the gravel parking lot. Once you're there, it's just a scenic 45-minute hike up to the top — a climb that's well worth breaking a sweat for. As a pro tip, don't miss out on tasting some of the region's local specialties, including elderflower and elderberry treats.

Experiencing a winter wonderland on the lake

Come winter, the lake area transforms completely into a wonderland that's ideal for snow-themed sports and activities. Some of these favorites include ice skating, snowshoeing, and even joining the locals for a friendly game of curling. For visitors hoping to take part in some quieter winter activities, the snow-covered forests around Hintersee also boast a collection of excellent trails that are perfect for cross-country skiing and winter hiking, and they're a great way to soak up the beauty of the Austrian mountains at your own pace. Throw in a visit to some of the regions' traditional Alpine Christmas markets (typically running from the end of November through the end of December) — which take place in the nearby towns of Ebenau (8.3 miles from Lake Fuschl), Faistenau (5.8 miles), Fuschl am See (2.1 miles), and Koppl (8.1 miles) — and you've got yourself the perfect winter trip to Europe.

Additionally, winter is also the best time to visit Austria's mountains for a great ski trip. Specifically, the Fuschlsee region offers six family-run ski lifts spread across its villages. With gentle slopes suitable for beginners, families, and amateurs looking to hone their skiing skills, it's perfect for a laid-back winter sports experience. Looking for more of a challenge? The larger Lake District (Salzkammergut) is a popular resort area that includes Lake Fuschl. The area is home to an additional seven major ski resorts and more than 180 miles of slopes to explore. Logistics-wise, equipment rentals are also readily available throughout the area. Plus, the free winter shuttle service (lines 150, 155, and 157) connect Salzburg to Faistenau, Tiefbrunnau, and Hintersee (and back), which makes getting to the slopes hassle-free for both locals and visitors alike.
