Explore California's Imposing Redwoods In A Unique Way On An Underrated Family Adventure
When you think of California, images of sundrenched beaches or the glamorous Hollywood sign may come to mind, but these are just two of The Golden State's icons. Bathed in fog and towering above their forest neighbors, coastal redwoods are one of the state's greatest natural treasures and an integral part of California's economic and cultural history. While camping amongst gorgeous redwoods is ideal for a family-friendly getaway, if you only have a few hours to experience these gentle giants with the kids, book a rail excursion with Roaring Camp in Felton.
Ride beneath gigantic redwood trees, over historic bridges, and along the serene San Lorenzo River as your guide shares stories about the logging railroad — even the little ones will be enthralled. Dating back to the 1890s, the vintage engines are beautifully preserved and will transport you to the turn of the century. Although the trains depart year-round, December is the best time to join a themed ride. From the end of November through December, the Holiday Lights Train brings cheer with thousands of Christmas lights, apple cider or hot chocolate, and sing-alongs. Roaring camp also offers a Chanukah train, an Easter ride with an egg hunt, and excursions between January and March that educate guests about the redwood ecosystem.
Ride to the beach or discover the redwoods on a vintage train at Roaring Camp
Although Roaring Camp (often called Roaring Camp Santa Cruz) offers numerous themed rides, you must choose between two excursion routes. Lasting 75 minutes, the Redwood Forest Steam Train Excursion is the best way to get up close and personal with these coastal giants. Pulled by a steam locomotive that once hauled timber, the cars wind through shady redwood groves, providing opportunities to see old-growth trees and wave at people enjoying the river or hiking through Henry Cowell State Park. The route takes you to Bear Mountain and back to Roaring Camp.
The second option is the round-trip Santa Cruz Beach Train Excursion, which travels between the redwoods, through Santa Cruz's Victorian house district, and drops you at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Make sure you keep an eye on the time – the last departure back to Roaring Camp is at 4 p.m. This journey takes about an hour and isn't the best option if you only want to see the redwoods, but it's a great choice for beach fun.
At Roaring Camp Train Station, kids can enjoy gold panning, candle making, blacksmithing, and face-painting, or participate in the activities scavenger hunt – the prizes are a real hit. Order hearty barbeque fare from Chuckwagon, eat lunch at the picnic tables, or reserve a picnic basket at the general store and snack on the train.
Ride the Giant Dipper, witness thousands of butterflies, and other family-friendly activities in Santa Cruz
While the family-friendly activities in Santa Cruz are sure to leave lasting memories, there are a few that prove why this coastal town is a must-see destination on any West Coast trip. Take the train to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and ride the Giant Dipper, the oldest wooden roller coaster on the West Coast, or jockey for the best pony on the nostalgic carousel. Try bowling, mini-golf, and laser tag, or enjoy a day on the soft sand.
Alternatively, spot beautiful butterflies at this stunning California beach state park, but keep in mind that the wave action is deceptively strong and unsuitable for kids. From the end of October through the beginning of February, monarch butterflies migrate to the fragrant eucalyptus trees at Natural Bridges State Beach. Here, you can observe up to 10,000 butterflies flitting from leaf to leaf and clustering along the branches. In addition, the nature center offers interactive exhibits and the chance to learn more about these beautiful creatures.
Other kid-friendly activities in Santa Cruz include visiting the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, kayaking at the yacht harbor with Kayak Connection, defying gravity at the Mystery Spot, and stopping by the Downtown Santa Cruz Farmer's Market. For family-friendly eats, stop by Woodstock's Pizza Santa Cruz or have a meal on the wharf at Gilda's. Also, don't miss the seasonal delights at a local legend, The Penny Ice Creamery.
