Glamp On A Beautiful Mountaintop In Maryland At This Cozy Family-Owned Getaway Destination
Not all camping retreats require a tent, and you don't need to pull up to a plot of dirt and spend hours pitching up a glorified tarp only to sleep on the cold hard ground. You can enjoy sleeping under the stars with an actual roof over your head where you won't be at the mercy of pesky bugs and unpredictable weather. You can have a camping experience with clean bathrooms and heating facilities. Welcome to glamping, where you can be one with nature — on your own terms.
If you are planning your next U.S. glamping trip, you must check out Wild Yough Glamping Huts. Located in Oakland, Maryland(in the middle of Garrett County), Wild Yough is a cluster of five cozy wood huts perfect for a mountaintop glamping getaway. Owners Dan and Beth Glasstetter bought the land in 1994 and built the glamping site a few years later after finding inspiration from their glamping experiences across Europe and Africa.
The site stretches across 350 acres of private land and is surrounded by thousands of acres of forest, lakes, beaches, and rivers. Walk or bike along one of the many trails. Swim in the Youghiogheny River (the landmark this glamping site is named after), or visit one of the many nearby state parks. The site is also a short drive from the shops and restaurants in Oakland and resorts in McHenry. You can immerse yourself in nature, easily rejoin civilization for a quick shopping or dining trip, and then retreat back to your cozy, secluded abode.
Cozy up in your very own glamping hut
Glamping is a lot less intimidating than traditional tent camping, and Wild Yough makes the experience even more restful. Each of the five huts can accommodate two adults and two kids and can even fit up to four adults (though it will be a snug fit). They have their unique features and backstory inspired by the Glasstetter family's travels. The Stanley hut is the only one that offers easy access for glampers with disabilities.
Each hut has one double bed and one fold-out couch but no bed sheets, so you'll have to bring your own. There are two comforters and four pillows without pillowcases to share among the occupants. When it gets chilly, the hut's heater will provide all the warmth you need; just remember to bring your own propane. If you plan on cooking your meals, the huts include private kitchens equipped with a skillet, some pots, strainers, a spatula, and other cookware, along with two burner propane cooktops. No need to bring your own dishware, as each hut provides plates, bowls, silverware, and cups.
Wild Yough's common area includes a bathhouse with electricity, hot water, and full-size showers so you can freshen up after your outdoor adventures. Just remember to bring your own towels. It also has a pavilion that features comfy lounge chairs and picnic tables where you can socialize with fellow glampers or host group events. There is also a full-size barbeque and griddle, a fire pit to huddle around and pop popcorn over, and plenty of board games, puzzles, and other outdoor games.
Turn your glamping adventure into a party
One thing to know before booking your glamping getaway to Wild Yough is that you can turn this simple outdoor trip into a real adventure for all the family (or friends, if you are traveling with buddies). In doing so, you will unlock even more amenities. The whole site can accommodate up to 22 people, so rent out all five huts and get access to a full-size fridge, a percolating coffee pot, a hot water boiler, an electric toaster, and additional cooking gear.
The atmosphere at Wild Yough is delightful at all times, but it can really amp up a special occasion. This is perfect for celebrating birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, graduations, or any other event you can imagine. You'll have the entire site to yourself and your loved ones and won't have to worry about sharing the facilities with strangers. It all comes together to make Maryland's Wild Yough Glamping Huts the ultimate home away from home for lovers of the outdoors.
