One Of Britain's Best Beaches Is An Iconic Destination With Gorgeous Panoramic Views

Wales, a little piece of land located on the edge of Great Britain, is a land of legend, ancient castles, high mountains, and ... gorgeous beaches? That's right! Unless you're actually a local, the United Kingdom likely doesn't enter your radar when planning your beach vacation. But with thousands of miles of shoreline, and the many scenic beach towns along the coast ranging from ritzy resorts to tiny villages, plus a surprising amount of white sand and sunshine, the U.K. coast deserves a chance.

The incredible beaches of Wales may be slightly less accessible than ones in England, as most international travelers fly into London first, but Cardiff — the capital of Wales — is only a three-hour drive or two-hour train from London. There are also plenty of flights to Cardiff or to the next biggest airport in Bristol, England. There are several picturesque beaches within an hour from Cardiff, but if you're willing to go farther, the Gower Peninsula, only 60 miles away, is home to some truly spectacular coastline. And at the tip of the peninsula lies the tiny village of Rhossili, above the long stretch of sandy beach and dramatic cliffs known as Rhossili Bay Beach and Worm's Head, considered one of Europe's best beach destinations.

Known as "the supermodel of British beaches," Rhossili Bay has not only been named the best beach in Wales and the U.K. by several publications, but also one of the top beaches in Europe and, by some ratings, the world. The destination has also received various other accolades: it's one of the best surf spots in Wales and has been voted the most dog-friendly beach in Britain. Everyone agrees that this U.K. beach is a gorgeous treasure you have to see at least once. 

So, how do you get to this 3-mile stretch of sandy paradise? If you're coming from Cardiff, it's about two hours by car and three hours by train or bus to the village of Rhossili. The beach is accessed via a steep set of stairs from the parking lot. Parking costs around $7.50 for the day. All of the closest amenities, including bathrooms, are located in the town. Rhossili is small but home to several charming inns, cafés, and pubs.

The Gower Peninsula's longest stretch of sand is a hidden gem in Europe ideal for exploring adventures. Even the short but steep hike down (and up) Rhossili Bay Beach can seem adventurous, as can wandering along the windswept cliffs of the Rhossili Downs, which form one end of the beach. Surfers and hang gliders spike their adrenaline on the water and air currents, and hikers pass by along the Gower Way. It's also a famous destination for birdwatchers, so bring binoculars to spot various species that nest in the towering cliffs.

At low tide, the exposed sand reveals several shipwrecks, evidence of the area's history of piracy and smuggling. The most famous is the wooden remains of the Helvetia, which went down during a storm in 1887. Also at low tide, you can walk along the headland and cross a causeway to Worm's Point (named for the Viking word for dragon, "wurm"), two tiny islands connected by the rocky Devil's Bridge. As the point is no longer accessible during high tide, check with the Coastwatch Centre before you go to ensure you don't get stranded!
