The Colorful Beachside Village In Spain Best Known For Its Seafood And Scenic Cliffs
Spain is one of the more vibrant destinations in Europe with its stunning beaches, colorful history, and ample opportunities for adventure. There are many reasons it should be your next adventure destination! But while Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville tend to be the most popular tourist destinations, there are so many hidden gems to discover. For instance, some travel experts like Rick Steves argue that Basque Country, along Spain's northern coast, doesn't get enough love on European itineraries. Santander is another highly underrated coastal city with endless things to do.
But if you travel west from there for about 130 miles along the coast, you'll find the tiny little fishing village of Cudillero hidden among the cliffs. This nearly 5,000-resident municipality is situated on the Cantabrian Sea in the principality of Asturias. Aside from the mesmerizingly blue water, the most visually striking thing about this unique village is the colorful buildings (thanks to the use of leftover boat paint) situated like an amphitheater around the main plaza and the harbor.
What to do in Cudillero
The best way to explore the narrow paths, winding roads, and tricky topography is on foot. In fact, there is a circular footpath aptly named "la ruta de los miradores" — or "the route of the viewpoints," en inglés — which will take you to several breathtaking panoramic views around the town. Make sure you also stop by the Humilladero Chapel, a 13th-century Gothic building which was only rediscovered about 25 years ago during a renovation.
Once you've worked up an appetite from a healthy dose of walking on an incline, sit back and relax at one of the charming local spots on Plaza de Marina. As you can imagine, Cudillero is a prime location for fresh local seafood. Casa Julio comes highly recommended by travelers for not only the delicious seafood but the Asturian staple: "sidra," or hard apple cider. If you'd rather stick to tapas, Tienda La Gijonesa is a popular choice that serves up artisan cheeses and cured meats with friendly service.
Don't miss the town's incredible beaches
It would be a shame to be so close to the intoxicating Cantabrian Sea and not go for a swim. And from Cudillero you're but a 15-minute cab ride or rental car drive from several incredible beaches. To the west is Playa de la Concha de Artedo: a golden sand beach ideal for sunset strolls. Just about 10 minutes further is Playa Silencio. This slice of heaven routinely makes an appearance on best beach lists and for good reason. The sparkling clear water, silvery pebble beach, and dramatic cliffs give this spot a look all its own. It is completely devoid of any amenities, but the waves are small and manageable making it easy to swim as long as you watch for rocks.
If you drive 10 minutes to the east of Cudillero, you'll find Playa Aguilar. This beach has fewer pebbles, softer sand, and more amenities than the others: specifically showers and lifeguards. It's also one of the most popular beaches in the area and a favorite for surfing and beach volleyball.
