Nestled within one of California's best wine regions, Sonoma County is home to over 400 wineries and several publicly preserved forests and coastal habitats. Goat Rock Beach is arguably the best beach in the county and one of the state's finest natural destinations, but flies under the radar.

The state-owned Goat Rock Beach is home to the eponymous rocky structure that'll probably be the backdrop to all the selfies you take and it's home to a variety of sea friends, including seals, sea lions, and otters. Goat Rock Beach is part of the Russian River State Marine Conservation Area (SMRCA), meaning that some activities, such as fishing or walking your dog, are prohibited. But it's all to protect the array of wildlife on its shores and in its waters! Perhaps one of its biggest draws, Goat Rock Beach is home to a colony of Pacific harbor seals. You can admire them from a distance, but please give these wild animals their space for both their safety and your own. Time your visit in the spring or summer and you may catch a glimpse of some adorable seal pups! It's also possible to spot sea lions, elephant seals, and otters from the shore, but sightings are much less frequent.

The waters at Goat Rock Beach can get quite rough, making it perfect for marine life but a dangerous place to swim for people, so be wary. Swimming is prohibited, and it's always wise to bring a fully charged phone with you in case of emergency.  Set against sandy shores, Goat Rock in itself is a stunning, photo-worthy feature, but due to the strong coastal winds and dangerous waves, it's not possible to get around the rock. There are two convenient parking lots at either end of the beach, picnic tables, and restrooms for a comfortable afternoon by the ocean.

Many have speculated about the origins of the name of Goat Rock Beach, and the topic will likely come up when you're relaxing on the beach's soft sands. Well, local legend has it that goats grazed on the top of Goat Rock during the early 20th century. This legend coincides with a huge surge in the popularity of goats across the U.S. after the first dairy goat show in America was held at the 1904 World Fair in St. Louis. How's that for some beachside trivia? Goats have often been used to clear the land in Sonoma County through grazing, and since they are champion climbers, it's not difficult to imagine these dextrous hikers atop this rocky feature.

Goat Rock Beach's unique ambiance also earned it a place in the cinematic hall of fame. Richard Donner's 1985 action-adventure classic, "The Goonies," was also partially filmed here! The rocky monument was used at the end of the film and renamed Cauldron Point, which features a multitude of the regions' formations. Goat Rock Beach's special appearance makes it a must-see destination in California for film buffs, or those with a passion for history and lore.
