Exactly How Far In Advance Should You Book Your Hotel In Europe? Rick Steves Weighs In
Planning where to stay when traveling means factoring in location, cost, amenities, and maybe some review websites (even though their questionable validity might make you think twice about trusting them). Considering how far in advance to book is usually something people do for flights rather than lodging. However, the same planning should go into booking a hotel, especially in popular destinations across Europe that receive millions of visitors each year.
Travel expert Rick Steves has booked his fair share of hotels either for himself or for his tour company guests. His booking strategy has changed over time as well. While he used to simply fly by the seat of his pants, he now does much more careful research thanks to increased competition in the tourism industry. "If flexibility isn't a concern, book your rooms as soon as your itinerary is set," he explains on his website. "I reserve several weeks — or even months — in advance."
Take local events into account when booking hotels
It is important to note that Steves usually opts for what he calls "characteristic, family-run hotels in the heart of a town." He prefers these "characteristic" European hotels because they are often more authentic to the surrounding culture rather than looking like every other chain Hilton or Best Western in the world. Steves also mentions location. A hotel in the center of town likely means it's busier, more walkable, and more in demand. Booking well in advance ensures that the central hotels won't all be sold out by the time your vacation rolls around.
One thing too many travelers forget while making a European itinerary is the local event schedule or busy season. If you plan a trip to France around the Bastille Day celebrations or if a major music festival will be occurring, hotel availability might feel the affects. "It's especially important to reserve as early as possible for stays that fall on holidays, during big festivals, and in peak season. In popular cities — such as London, Paris, Madrid, and Venice — it's smart to book far in advance year-round," says Steves.
