One Of The World's Most Beautiful Lakes Is In Grand Teton National Park, Per Samantha Brown
Travel guru Samantha Brown loves a lake. Whether sailing on (and trying to spell) Lake Winnipesaukee in her home state of New Hampshire or basking in the glory of Switzerland's Lake Geneva, she's always happy by the water. But Brown does play favorites, and in Grand Teton National Park, she's found what she calls "one of the most beautiful lakes you will ever see." Writing on her site, she gives this accolade to Jackson Lake in Wyoming.
It's easy to see why Brown loves Jackson Lake: the scenery is absolutely jaw-dropping. The 15-mile-long lake glistens under the jagged peaks of the Tetons, and small, tree-covered islands dot the water. You could spend hours just soaking in the views from the shore.
To enjoy some of the best vistas, head to Colter Bay, a lesser-known destination to escape the crowds of Grand Teton. Put on your hiking boots and start with the Lakeshore Trail, a gentle walk through the forest and on the shore with spectacular scenery at every turn. The Heron Pond Swan Lake Trail is another short hike. Visitor Michael Barton writes, "Heron Pond has the most underrated view in the park." Heron Pond can be combined with a longer walk to Hermitage Point, which also offers fabulous views.
Adventure awaits around Jackson Lake
Jackson Lake isn't just a picturesque hiking destination — it offers tons to do for more active travelers. The lake is popular for boating, canoeing and kayaking, and you can rent your vessel of choice at Colter Bay. Power or paddle out onto the lake, weaving among the islets that dot the bay and take in the glorious scenery in peace. Samantha Brown writes that the lake is also a great place for wildlife watching — the area is home to black and grizzly bears, moose, and elk, among other animals.
Brown also loves the lake's proximity to the town of Jackson, the perfect place for a romantic getaway for outdoor enthusiasts. Trendy Jackson has managed to retain its frontier feel and offers visitors excellent restaurants, luxury hotels, and tons of entertainment in an authentic Western setting. It's a great place to escape after spending the day outdoors at Jackson Lake. The lake is best visited as part of a scenic road trip, with a stop in nearby Yellowstone National Park and a hike in the Tetons.
