This Local-Favorite Tennessee Waterfall Is One Of The World's Most Scenic Swimming Holes

With warm sunny days ending, take advantage of the final days of sunshine by visiting one of the world's most scenic swimming holes. Located in Cummins Falls State Park, just 9 miles north of Cookeville, Tennessee, this popular local spot offers several activities for those who love the outdoors. At 75 feet high, the falls remain Tennesse's eighth-largest and offer breathtaking panoramas and — unlike most waterfalls — the rare opportunity to venture beneath its rushing waters.

The park itself spans over 306 acres of rugged but beautiful terrain. At the base of this magnificent waterfall is a scenic swimming hole, attracting splash-happy visitors from worldwide for over 100 years. With amazing hiking and waterfall views, it is easy to see why Cummins Falls has scooped up awards in the past. Whether hiking, fishing, or swimming,  this delightful Tennessee state park and its incredible swimming hole offer something for every outdoor adventurer.

All about Cummins Falls State Park

Cummins Falls State Park extends over 306 acres of astonishing rugged beauty. Originally acquired by the Cummins family in 1825, the expansive area was used to build a water-run mill. After the flood of 1928 washed the commercially used mill away, the area became solely recreational, giving us the scenic swimming hole that adventurers can visit today. While visitors may be eager to venture down to its gleaming pools, prospective hikers should come prepared for a challenging trek.

According to their website, two routes access the gorge through approximately 1.5 miles of strenuous hiking, requiring visitors to climb over slippery rocks and wade through rushing waters. However, those undaunted by the task will find an oasis of sparkling water, rocks to sunbathe, and the sounds of unadulterated nature. If unable to make the journey to the bottom of the falls, the park has provided an easily accessible overlook, with picnicking and wheelchair-accessible parking, according to one user on All Trails.

What to know before visiting Cummins Falls

Access to the gorge requires all visitors to pre-purchase a permit from the website, which costs $7.68 for the day at the time of writing. Those not looking to access the waterfall do not need a pass and can freely visit other parts of the park. All hikers visiting the swimming hole should wear sturdy shoes, bring a small backpack for belongings, and leave the cooler at home. Access to the base of the falls is only available on days with good weather. Life vests and adult supervision are required for children 12 and under to swim.

Aside from hiking, fishing, and swimming, Cummins Falls State Park offers a variety of different activities for visitors to enjoy, such as boating, camping, activities for educators, golfing, and horseback riding. Those looking to experience one of the world's most scenic swimming holes and several other activities should venture down to Cummins Falls State Park for a day full of adventure. If you can't get there before the weather turns, make this your 2025 must-do.
