Swim In Clear Waters At This Lesser-Known White Sand Texas Beach That Feels Tropical

We've all heard the popular phrase, "everything's bigger in Texas." When you're talking about football games or the Texas State Fair, that can be a good thing. But when you're talking about driving distances, it can be daunting. Even though the Lone Star State boasts 350 miles of beaches, you may not feel like driving five hours to the nearest beach if you're in the massive portion of Texas that is landlocked. But fear not, fellow beach bums, there's a place that can give you that tropical vibe you're looking for right in the middle of North Texas.

Around 30 miles southwest of Fort Worth lies the town of Granbury. This heavenly slice of small-town Texas was voted USA Today's Best Historic Small Town in America for three years in a row. And right in the middle of town, perched on the edge of Lake Granbury, you'll find Granbury City Beach, a slice of seaside charm that transports you from Texas to the tropics.

Fun in the sun at Granbury City Beach

This little oasis offers many of the things you want in a seaside vacation: white sand, clear water, water sports, and even thatched roof picnic pavilions (first come, first served). Best of all, admission is free. Keep in mind that the white sand can get awfully hot in the Texas sun, so it's a good idea to bring water shoes. There are shallow swimming areas and a free loaner life jacket station to cater to swimmers of all skill levels, but be aware that there are no lifeguards.

There's also a splash park on-site if you're traveling with little ones, or you can try this tip to keep toddlers both cool and safe. If you're trying to pack light for your beach vacation, no problem; you can visit Beachside Toys and Takeout for all your rental needs. Even if you forget something, the park is within walking distance of the downtown square. Whether you're traveling by yourself, with your sweetheart, or with the whole family, Granbury City Beach is easy to navigate.

Where to stay and what to do in Granbury

There are plenty of beautiful places to stay nearby, and one stand out is the Inn on Lake Granbury. Whether you prefer a romantic guestroom or a well-appointed guesthouse, you'll find luxury accommodations and sweeping lake views. It's just over half a mile from City Beach Park, so you have the option to walk or drive.

Once you've had your fill of beach fun, walk to the charming historic square centered around the stunning 1891 Hood County Courthouse. Pause for a tour, or make your way around the square for stops at a delightful array of boutiques and restaurants. If you've never been, don't miss Babe's Chicken Dinner House (a North Texas institution), but be sure to wear your stretchy pants.

History buffs will love the Hood County Jail Museum (only open on the weekends) or the Granbury Historic Railroad Depot. Don't forget to catch a show at the recently restored Granbury Opera House. Or load up the car and take in a movie at the Brazos Drive-In Theater just a mile from the town square; there's even a playground for the kiddos.
