Explore The Largest Cascading Waterfall In The Southeast At This Beautiful State Park

Nineties kids were always warned: "Don't go chasing waterfalls." However, if the chase leads you to the beauty of the largest cascading waterfall in the Southeast, then the singers of TLC would certainly make an exception. Nestled in North Georgia's Chattahoochee National Forest, Amicalola Falls State Park is one of Georgia's most visited natural areas. What attracts visitors to this beautiful area is Georgia's tallest waterfall. At 729 feet, it is the largest cascading waterfall in the southeast, and the third-largest east of the Mississippi River.

A fun fact for anyone who loves the outdoors: Those looking to hike the famous Appalachian Trail can access the "beginning" through the Appalachian Approach Trail, which is approximately an 8-mile hike to the trail's southern end on Springer Mountain. The Appalachian Approach Trail actually starts at Amicalola Falls. Whether draped in snow, blooming with flowers, or vibrant with color in autumn, a stunning hike to this majestic waterfall should be included on everyone's bucket list.

How to get to Amicalola Falls

There are two ways to access Amicalola Falls. Visitors can drive to the upper observation platform at the top of the falls for a shorter hike. The second option is to start the hike from the visitor center. There is a $5.00 entry fee for cars entering the park, while frequent visitors can purchase a $50 annual Park Pass. From either entry point, the hike is about 2 miles in total round trip. The hike takes visitors through beautiful foliage, with the sounds of rushing water all around. Although not entirely strenuous, it is recommended to bring proper footwear to avoid slippage throughout some of the steeper parts of the hike.

The trail takes visitors to the top of the falls, where they can descend the rocky side via stairs and bridges. Once visitors reach the bottom of the steps, they are met with stunning up-close views of the lower portion of the waterfall. According to one TripAdvisor user, those not looking to hike can take their cars to the reflective pond at the bottom of the falls and drive to the parking lot at the top. Amicolola Falls State Park is one of Georgia's most popular parks, so while you may think you're the only one with the idea to visit the beauty of the waterfall, especially on a fair-weather day, plan to expect some company. Attempt your visit to the falls in the early morning or during the week to try and beat the crowds of families and photographers.

Other activities in Amicalola Falls State Park

While a hike to Amicalola Falls is one of the main attractions in the park, it is not the only one. Those looking to make their trip longer have numerous different choices for an overnight stay. There are options for glamping, camping, and lodges spread throughout the park. A few lodging locations, such as the Len Foote Hike Inn, are only accessible by hiking, so be prepared to carry your overnight items with you.

For those seeking dining options outside of picnicking, the Cascades Restaurant offers a range of dishes with a stunning view of the forest below. The park offers a multitude of other activities, including ziplining, trout fishing, hatchet throwing, archery, and guided tours. Amicalola Falls State Park also has options for those looking to host a wedding, family reunion, or corporate retreat.
