iPhone Users Can Easily Convert Currency While Traveling Abroad With A Hidden iOS 18 Hack
One of the easiest — and perhaps most embarrassing — ways to blow your travel budget is accidentally overspending in a foreign currency. Some currencies aren't so simple to convert with basic mental math, making it difficult to know how much something really costs. Next thing you know, you've spent way more than you intended on a meal or souvenir T-shirt.
When given the option, you could choose to pay using your home country's currency so you have a better understanding of the total price. But due to pricey conversion fees, it's always better to pay in the local currency while traveling abroad. So how can you stay on top of your travel expenses without getting confused? Thankfully, iOS launched an easy feature to make calculating currencies quick and easy. You don't even need Wi-Fi to try it out.
First, you'll need to make sure your iPhone or iPad is updated with the iOS 18 (or later) software. You can check by going to your device's settings and searching for software updates under "General." Once your device is up to date, head to the Apple calculator app to start converting currencies on the go.
How to quickly convert currencies on your phone
Once you've opened the calculator app on your device, look for the calculator icon in the bottom corner. Tap the icon and select the "Convert" toggle. From there, you can tap the unit in the top number field to open a page full of different options, including "Currency." Scroll through the list to find the currency you want to convert. Then, do the same for the bottom number field. You can then start entering values to get an accurate conversion between the two currencies. Note that if you're not connected to Wi-Fi or using an international travel eSim or data plan, the calculator will populate with the exchange rate available when you were last online.
If you don't have an iPhone or you haven't updated to the latest iOS software, there are other travel tools to help you with exchange rates. Having an app downloaded typically means you can still do conversions even when offline. If you have access to the internet and don't want to add another app to your screen, you can also do a quick Google search to find the latest exchange rates.
Keep in mind that these tools won't give you any insight on what a fair price is for, say, a cup of coffee or a sit-down meal in another country. For that, you'll have to research your destination to determine how much is too much to spend. Still, staying on top of currency exchange rates will help you avoid sticker shock once you return home and review your bank statements.
