An Hour From Indianapolis Is A Scenic Recreation Area Boasting The State's Most Famed Falls

With average summer temperatures in central Indiana sitting between 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, there's no better way to spend a hot, blistering day than at one of the state's best recreation areas, picnicking right next to its most famed waterfall. Lieber State Recreation Area encompasses over 8,000 acres and is located just an hour outside of Indianapolis, making it an extremely popular recreation area for many. The recreation area also houses the spectacular Cataract Falls. There is certainly no shortage of recreation opportunities in the area, either. The recreation area is awash with underrated hiking, camping, swimming, fishing, boating, interpretive programs, and more.

In addition to lots of outdoor recreation activities, Lieber State also has a state-of-the-art pool — with a water slide! Camping is incredibly popular here as well, with more than 100 sites ranging from basic sites to hookup sites to group sites. Lieber State staff also offer numerous events for those new to the outdoors as well as those interested in learning more about the area. Guided hikes, kid's activities, various outdoor programs, and wildlife presentations are offered throughout the year for guests.

Cataract Falls hails visitors from all over the country

Guests from far and wide come every year to view arguably Indiana's most beautiful spot, the gorgeous falls located inside the recreation area. Cataract Falls is technically two sets of waterfalls — the Upper Falls and Lower Falls. These levels of falls are located roughly 1 mile apart from each other along Mill Creek, which runs through Lieber State. The Upper Falls has a drop of roughly 45 feet, while the Lower Falls is around 30 feet in height.

It is believed that Cataract Falls was created by two pre-glacial bedrock ridges sandwiched together and buried beneath various layers of lake sediments. The water from these falls flows from Cagles Mill Lake, where it meanders through acres of undeveloped parts of the park before it plummets over the first falls and eventually the second. Bald eagles are often seen soaring over the lake and the falls, adding another layer of grandeur to an already spectacular day out.

There is no limit of water activities

While Lieber State Recreation Area is not home to any large natural bodies of water, that doesn't stop thousands of visitors from enjoying the artificial lake in its boundaries. Cagles Mill Lake — encompassing over 1,400 acres — was formed in 1952, acting as the state's first flood control reservoir. The lake offers visitors endless opportunities for water sports and activities. Guests can enjoy using the swimming area, boating or paddling around the lake's borders, and fishing for bass, catfish, and bluegill in its waters. Lieber State also offers boat and kayak rentals, so be sure to take one out and paddle around the lake if the mood fits.

If lakes and fish aren't your thing, that's no problem at Lieber State Recreation Area. This place also has a huge swimming pool equipped with a swirly water slide. There are plenty of lounge chairs surrounding the pool, so whether you want to spend your day catching some rays or making endless loops down the slide, this recreation area has got you covered. Don't forget to check out Lieber State Recreation Area's miles and miles of hiking trails or its basketball and volleyball courts, and make sure to stop and take a few photos at the popular covered bridge spanning over Mill Creek before you leave.
