Step Into The World Of Some Of Your Favorite Fall Movies In This Pacific Northwest Town
Summer is coming to an end, spooky season is on its way, and there's perhaps no better place to visit than a community nicknamed Halloweentown. The town's real name is St. Helens, and at first glance, it's an unassuming spot located a 40-minute drive north of Portland, Oregon. But spend a little time exploring and you might start to notice that something about St. Helens feels familiar and nostalgic.
That feeling isn't all in your head. Several movies have been filmed in St. Helens, including classic fall flicks "Halloweentown" (hence the nickname) and "Twilight." Scenes from the former, a witchy Disney film, can be found around the town, as well as in other parts of Oregon (the perfect excuse for a scenic road trip of the state's hidden gems and top attractions). In St. Helens, head to the address of the now-closed Nob Hill Riverview Bed & Breakfast, which was used as Aggie Cromwell's house. Wander a little further until you spot Columbia Theatre, another familiar site used in "Halloweentown." "Twilight" fans will want to check out Bella Swan's house at 184 South 6th Street, the parking lot near 260 South 2nd Street, and the numerous other locations featured in the film.
St. Helens gets festive during the Spirit of Halloweentown
Visiting St. Helens' film locations is fun enough, but to really immerse yourself in the spine-chilling action, be sure to visit during the Spirit of Halloweentown festivities. This year, the event takes place from September 28 through Halloween night at the Courthouse Plaza. Most activities and performances are scheduled during the weekends, so plan your trip accordingly.
Just as its name suggests, Spirit of Halloweentown is inspired by the "Halloweentown" movie franchise, and you'll find several nods to the film at the festival. For instance, the huge jack-o'-lantern from the movie is known to make an appearance at the event, as well as Benny the Skeleton in his taxi cab. In addition to props and scenes from "Halloweentown," you'll also find plenty of spooky time fun. Expect creepy games, a haunted house, street performances, costume contests, a museum of rare and bizarre items, and more.
Planning your trip to Oregon's Halloweentown
St. Helens is located on the border of Oregon and Washington, making it easily accessible from both states. If you're coming from another part of the country, plan to fly into a nearby airport. The closest major airport is Portland International Airport, situated just 45 minutes away by car. Other hubs include Eugene Airport and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, each about two and a half hours away from St. Helens.
When visiting St. Helens, give yourself at least a full day to explore the famous sites and at least one full evening to partake in the Spirit of Halloweentown events. For maximum convenience, consider staying overnight in the town, though note that there are a limited number of accommodations in the area. Check availability at the local Best Western or the casual OYO Hotel. Alternatively, book a vacation rental through Airbnb or a similar platform.
Fitting for this time of year, the weather at St. Helens can get chilly, especially at night, and rain is fairly common in the Pacific Northwest. Make sure to bring some sweaters, scarves, and waterproof outerwear during your trip. To really get into the Halloween spirit, pack your favorite costume or pumpkin-printed accessories to wear around town.
