Fall Colors And Activities Are Bursting At The Shores Of This Underrated Wisconsin Lake
Can you feel it? A chill in the morning air. The scent of apples and cinnamon on the breeze. The crunch of dried leaves underfoot. That's fall. Many of us dream of experiencing New England's iconic autumn, with its vibrant colors, pumpkin patches, and hayrides. But before you (and millions of others) head out east, consider visiting a less crowded and equally beautiful spot to enjoy the best season of the year. Wisconsin's Lake Geneva is a fall lover's paradise.
Not to be confused with the famous lake in Switzerland and France, Wisconsin's Lake Geneva is an underrated gem that's surprisingly accessible. It's under an hour's drive from Milwaukee and just short of two hours from Chicago, but it somehow flies under the radar of many travelers. Plus, it's a great starting point for one of the most haunted road trips in the country — perfect for Halloween!
Lake Geneva is surrounded by trees that burst into beautiful golden, orange, and red hues during the fall. The colors tend to peak in mid-October, though you can check what's happening on Wisconsin's Fall Color Report. Throughout the season, there are fall-themed activities, crisp air, and glorious views to enjoy around Lake Geneva.
Fall trails and scenic views
For many, the number one fall activity in the area is to walk the Geneva Lake Shore Path – or at least to walk part of it, as it's up to 26 miles long! The picturesque path is paved for a mile in each direction beginning at the Lake Geneva Public Library, making this the most accessible part of the trail. Wherever you begin your walk, you'll be greeted by a kaleidoscope of fall colors reflecting off the lake surface.
If you need a rest after your hike, pop into the library. The reading room and outdoor patio overlook the lake, providing peaceful spots to enjoy the fall views. Sticking by the lake, you can take a boat tour to see the fall foliage from the water. The tours are narrated, so you get to learn about the local history and the magnificent houses that line the shore.
When you've had enough of being at eye level with the trees, it's time to get a bird's-eye view at Lake Geneva Ziplines and Adventures. The nine zip lines give you a different perspective on the wildly colorful fall trees. There are many other family-friendly activities in the area, including a drive-through wildlife adventure safari and the incredible corn maze at Pearce's Farm Stand, where you can also pick your own pumpkin.
Discover the flavors of fall
All of that activity will likely leave you craving something to eat. Luckily, the area around Lake Geneva is awash with seasonal fall treats. At the Apple Barn Orchard and Winery (about 20 minutes from the lake), you can pick seasonal apples all the way through to December. For a less labor-intensive way to fill your stomach, visit the orchard's country store to try seasonal pies and cakes, cider donuts, and caramel apples.
Back toward Milwaukee, The Elegant Farmer's Harvest Fest is definitely worth a stop. But there's a better way to get there than by car! From the East Troy Railroad Museum about 20 minutes from the lake, you can reach The Elegant Farmer by vintage train. When you arrive, enjoy filling fall fare at the Smilin' Barn Cafe and pick up some goodies to take home from the market. There's also apple picking, hayrides, and a corn maze to enjoy. No visit to Wisconsin would be complete without cheese curds, no matter the season. At Lake Geneva, visit The Mars Resort, where this squeaky cheese snack is on the menu. You can then continue your fall getaway with the perfect Wisconsin road trip for cheese lovers.
