Follow The Yellow Brick Road To Oz In Real Life At This Magical North Carolina Festival

If you're a fan of "The Wizard of Oz," you simply must know about Land of Oz in Beech Mountain, North Carolina. If you have not heard of this unique theme park, you're in for a treat! In an email, Land of Oz artistic director Sean Barrett shared about the theme park's history. "The park was built at the top of Beech Mountain to bring in tourism during the summer months when the ski resort was not in season. Grover Robbins, who developed Beech Mountain and had a successful theme park called Tweetsie Railroad in nearby Blowing Rock, NC, brought Charlotte-based designer Jack Pentes to the top of the mountain to see what it could be turned into. Jack saw the trees and grass and said it looked like Oz. Grover immediately green-lit the concept," Barrett wrote.

While Land of Oz doesn't operate anymore (it was a initially open from 1970 to 1980), the space does open up to the public during special events, particularly Autumn at Oz. In 2024, Autumn at Oz will take place from September 6 through September 8, September 13 through September 15, and September 20 through September 22. The event is a testament to the enduring legacy of The "Wizard of Oz" and continues to bring joy and nostalgia to fans of all ages.

What is Autumn at Oz?

During Autumn at Oz, the park is transformed into a living version of the classic film, complete with iconic characters and locations. Visitors can follow the Yellow Brick Road through the enchanted forest, visit Munchkinland, and explore the Wicked Witch's castle. The park's vibrant colors, whimsical decorations, and live actors portraying Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and other beloved characters all work together to bring the story of Oz to life.

One of the highlights of Autumn at Oz is the interactive experience, where guests can participate in scenes from the movie, such as meeting the Wicked Witch or dancing with the Munchkins. The event also features live performances, craft vendors, and food stalls offering themed treats. For many visitors, the event is a nostalgic journey back to their childhood, while for others, it's a chance to introduce a new generation to the magic of Oz. Sean Barrett shared that guests can expect to spend about two to three hours in the park to experience all the festival offers.
