How To Reset Your TSA Lock Combination

When it comes to flying with checked bags, keeping your luggage protected from theft and damage is generally at the top of your must-dos and wants. After all, there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes that airlines do to your luggage once it gets checked. And let's be honest, no one likes to arrive at their destination only to find out that their bag has been rummaged through and picked apart.

Luckily, there's a way around this that won't compromise security protocols and still keep your checked luggage safe. Enter: TSA-approved locks. Designed to balance traveler privacy with necessary security measures, these specialized locks help you secure your belongings while, at the same time, allowing TSA agents to open and inspect your luggage if needed. Using a master key, TSA locks ensure that there's no need to cut off standard locks — or completely break your bag's zipper open — during routine security checks, which makes them a win-win for all parties involved.

Despite their many pros, TSA locks can also come with their own set of challenges, especially if you're using one for the first time or if you've forgotten your old combination. Thankfully, however, resetting your TSA lock is generally quite easy and straightforward — all you need is a little patience, a pointy object, and the right set of instructions.

Resetting your lock is a simple four-step process

If this is your first time setting the lock, clip in your zipper tags (most new bags should come with these clipped already) and set the dial to 000. Then, grab a pointy object — a pen or safety pin should work — and press the "Reset" button near the bottom or side of the lock. You should hear a subtle click that means the old combination has been released. From there, spin the three dials until you've landed on your preferred combination (make sure it's one that you can easily remember). Lastly, press the release button next to the dials — and voilá, your new combination is officially set. Alternatively, if you're hoping to change a combination from something you've set in the past, the process is pretty much the same. Just make sure that, instead of initially setting it to 000, you set it to the current combination you're hoping to change.

But what happens if you've locked your suitcase and can't remember the combination? While a little trickier than the first two scenarios, this doesn't necessarily mean that your suitcase is bound to stay locked forever. According to USA Today, one way to open a locked bag is to press down on the release button and slowly spin the dials one by one until you hear a click. This means that you've picked the right number. Once you've found the first digit, repeat the process two more times and it should pop open.
