This Uncrowded Florida Island Boasts Pristine White Sand Beaches And Unique Shops

Florida's tourist attractions vary from hidden gems full of beachy bliss to massive theme parks known all over the world. With so many options, it can be difficult to narrow down where you want to go. However, there are places that combine exciting activities with relaxing beaches. Many of these locales come without crowds, too.

While the name sounds a bit mythical, Treasure Island is a real place. This town is on a small jut of land opposite South Pasadena in the Tampa Bay area. It gets its name from an old hotel owner who buried treasure chests in order to attract more visitors to the area. While nowadays, there might not be too many pretend pirates looking for actual treasure, there is still plenty to do and see here. You can shop along boardwalks in the neighboring locale of John's Pass and spend time on Treasure Island Beach to catch some of the most gorgeous sunset views in the U.S. that seemingly stretch out endlessly over the Gulf of Mexico. There are also outdoor activities for all ages, making Treasure Island a great spot for a family beach vacation along Florida's beautiful coastline.

Visit Treasure Island during its annual sand sculpture competition

Looking at a map of Treasure Island and its surrounding communities, you will notice that there are a few manmade peninsulas for oceanfront housing purposes. However, this does not mean that Treasure Island lacks relaxing natural space. Treasure Island has quintessential Floridian white sand beaches with water that is clear enough for some great snorkeling. What really makes Treasure Island stand out is that it is known as the Sand Sculpture Capital of Florida. Around the end of November each year, Treasure Island Beach hosts the Sanding Ovations sand sculpture competition. Check online for exact dates each year, and arrive ready to see some incredible sand art.

Get close to the water and explore the coast by paddleboarding in Treasure Island. Head to PADL right on the beach to rent a paddleboard or even book a tour with PADL, which can be paddleboard or kayak tours and are open to all skill levels. Book these two-hour tours online. You can really get out on the water by chartering a pontoon boat for a day with Treasure Isle Boat Rentals, as well.

Take a boat tour on a beautiful and unique sailboat

Suncoast Sailing takes Treasure Island visitors aboard its iconic Suncoast Horizon sailboat. On these tours, you might spot bottlenose dolphins while you relax on board. The giant red sails add to the pirate theme that the name Treasure Island evokes, and some tours embark in the evenings so you can watch the sunset right on the water. Tours leave right from the company headquarters on Gulf Boulevard, which lines Treasure Island Beach. Speaking of Treasure Island Beach, it's a perfect place for a relaxing day in the sun, especially for families. It boasts a giant 4-story waterslide that will have kids (and let's be honest, adults too) screaming with exhilaration and fun.

Just over 1 mile from Treasure Island Beach is the John's Pass Village and Boardwalk. Throughout this small area are unique shopping opportunities with something for everyone. Pick up jewelry and home décor at The Bronze Lady, or clothing and souvenirs at Join n Join, Inc. For pet lovers, check out the treats and pet-themed merchandise at Paw Paws Boutique. Of course, no trip to Florida's Gulf Coast would be complete without some seafood. Find grouper, lobster, and shrimp at the Boardwalk Grill, or stop at the nationally-beloved Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.
