Explore The Most Impressive Waterfalls In Michigan On This Awe-Inspiring Road Trip
Home to state parks brimming with beautiful landscapes and plenty of family-friendly hiking adventures to choose from, Michigan's Upper Peninsula — a region sandwiched between three of the Great Lakes — isn't just about pristine forests and rocky shorelines — it's also home to some of the most impressive waterfalls you'll find this side of the Mississippi.
With nearly 200 cascades tucked away in and around its woodlands, the Upper Peninsula is a prime destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers looking to come face-to-face with these natural wonders. From thundering giants to hidden gems nestled in lush, green valleys, Michigan's waterfalls are a testament to the state's wild and untamed landscapes. And, to make matters even better, some of the most iconic falls are easily accessible over the course of an 8-hour road trip. It's a journey that'll take you far away from the overwhelming and bustling crowds of Detroit and the often-overrated tourist traps of Mackinac Island — and into the heart of the Great Lakes State's unspoiled beauty.
Driving from Potawatomi Falls to Bond Falls
In order to make the most of your trip, you'll want to kick things off at Potawatomi Falls. Located near the Minnesota and Wisconsin border — on the Black River Scenic Byway — Potawatomi Falls is easily accessible through a roughly 660-foot long riverside trail directly from the parking lot. As a bonus, the beautiful Gorge Falls are also just a stone's throw away, so be sure to check them out, too.
From there, it's time to head on to Gabbro Falls. Located about 18.5 miles south along Black River Road, the wild fall has three impressive drops that add up to about 40 feet. In terms of viewing options, you can either choose to follow the trail upstream toward the top of the falls, or head down toward the base. Moving on, your third and fourth stops will be Manabezho and Manido Falls, in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Sitting on the Presque Isle River, Manabezho Falls boasts a 25-foot drop and is considered one of the most popular in the state. Meanwhile, Manido Falls stands a little smaller at 15 feet, but that doesn't make it any less impressive.
Lastly, drive over roughly 65 miles east to Bond Falls in the Ottawa National Forest. Coming in at 100-feet wide and featuring a 50-foot drop, it's a popular destination throughout the year — especially in the fall, when the leaves turn orange. As for accessibility, the base of the falls is located just a 5-minute walk from the authorized parking area.
Heading toward Tahquamenon Falls State Park
From Bond Falls, drive to the iconic Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore — which is home to three of your next stops along this route. For starters, there's Munising Falls, featuring a 50-foot drop that draws in visitors from across the state (and the country). Similar to the other falls, this spot is also easily accessible throughout the year via a short trail — 800 feet long, to be exact.
Moving on, hit the road on a quick 9-mile drive north and you'll reach Miners Falls. Standing at 50 feet tall, this cascade's base is located just over half a mile away from the parking area — which makes it suitable for families and solo travelers alike. Lastly, you'll want to head 47 miles east toward Sable Falls, located on the easternmost edge of Pictured Rocks. For the best viewing experience, venture down the 168-step staircase and prepare to be blown away.
Wrapping things up, your last stop on the road trip is Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Brimming with campgrounds, scenic hiking trails, and postcard-worthy overlooks, the park spans nearly 50,000 acres — which makes it an ideal stop for outdoor enthusiasts. The star of the show, however, is the park's namesake waterfall. In terms of size, the Upper Tahquamenon Falls span 200 feet wide and 50 feet tall — making it the largest waterfall in Michigan. Not only that, but about 50,000 gallons of water cascade from the fall every second, all of which comes together for an unforgettable experience.
