This West Coast Destination Is The Perfect Romantic Getaway For Outdoor Enthusiasts
Situated at the base of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, Jackson Hole is a popular spot with the rich and famous. Admittedly, this may be for income tax reasons (Wyoming doesn't have an income tax), but still, celebrities like Sandra Bullock, RuPaul Charles, Kim Kardashian, and Harrison Ford have all visited and owned properties here. Apart from star spotting, there is a wealth of outdoor activities to suit everyone in this romantic getaway billed as one of the best honeymoon destinations in the West.
Jackson is the main town, whereas Jackson Hole refers to the entire valley that surrounds it — and it is the ideal place to spend 48 hours with a loved one (or more!). Warm in the summer, but snowy enough for skiing in the winter, Jackson Hole is a year-round tourist spot. In the fall, it is cool yet beautiful as the leaves change color, which makes the atmosphere even more romantic than usual. The mountainous backdrop is also the perfect setting for a couple's photography shoot to mark a special occasion!
How to get to Jackson Hole
While Jackson Hole does have an airport, it mainly receives flights from Denver, Salt Lake City, and Dallas/Fort Worth, although it does service other cities. It is the only commercial airport in the U.S. based entirely in a national park, so there are outstanding views of Grand Teton on a clear day to get you in the mood for romance. The airport is only 9 miles north of the Jackson Hole town square, so many of the hotels offer transfers if you arrange it or inquire when booking. You can also take the Jackson Hole Shuttle, which will take you to your resort.
Jackson Hole airport is close to the mountains, so there are occasions when flights are delayed or cancelled for safety reasons. A cheaper flying option is Salt Lake City International, which is a five-hour drive away but less likely to be affected by adverse weather conditions. From there, it is possible to rent a car, which allows you and your partner to plan an epic romantic road trip on your way to Jackson Hole! To save money, there is also the Mountain States Express that takes you from Salt Lake City to Jackson via the Star Valley. You can cuddle with your partner while taking in the great views of the Wyoming countryside.
Things to do in Jackson Hole
It's very difficult to get bored in Jackson Hole, as this compact valley is bursting with fun, couple-friendly activities to try. The ever-popular ski and snowboarding season varies but usually runs from November to April. If you and your partner want to visit outside of the season, there is more adrenaline-fueled fun to enjoy, such as white-water rafting or horse-riding. There are also ample opportunities for hiking, biking, paddle-boarding, kayaking, and canoeing. For some activities, you can book a private trip if you want more time to spend together. The Phelps Lake Loop Trail is a particularly scenic route in Grand Teton that would make a great spot for a proposal!
Wildlife lovers will rejoice here, as one of the largest elk herds can be found in the National Elk Refuge. It is also possible to see bison, pronghorn, moose, and bears while driving or on safari. Grizzly bears are most likely to be seen on the Antelope flats, Willow flats, Pacific Creek or the Moose-Wilson road areas. The National Museum of Wildlife Art also celebrates some of the area's incredible creatures. For those who want to end their trip in true romantic style, why not enjoy a private stargazing trip under Wyoming's dark and dreamy skies?
