Frontier Airlines Baggage Fees: The Most Common Questions Answered
Frontier Airlines is known for its cheap fare. However, what's included with the ticket price is very limited, especially when it comes to baggage. So, whether you're a frequent Frontier Airline flyer or not, it's always good to know how much money you'll need to allocate for the bags and other baggage you plan on bringing with you on your flight or risk paying more than you budget for.
Bag prices vary depending on when you're planning to fly. You can use this tool to check baggage rates for a trip you're planning or even for bag upgrades. Remember: It's always cheaper to pay for baggage in advance as airport prices will be higher. Note also that baggage charges are non-refundable.
The airline does offer bundle deals, but you'll have to determine if the inclusions are worth it for you. In addition, members of its frequent flyer program, Frontier Elite, do have some free baggage benefits (more on this below).
What's included in your Frontier Airlines fare?
When you fly on Frontier Airlines, your basic fare includes only one personal item. The airline defines a "personal item" as items that measure no more than 14" x 18" x 8" long and must fit under the seat. Examples of personal items include totes and purses, diaper bags and kids backpacks, briefcases, and computer bags. With a basic fare, you'll have to pay extra for any additional bags you bring onboard.
However, if you add on a bundle deal – either the Works bundle or the Perks bundle – you can bring a carry-on bag and one checked bag in addition to your one personal item. Prices of these bundles vary according to your destination and the time you booked them, but a quick test search should give a rough estimate of the possible price you have to pay. If you have Elite status, you'll be able to bring a carry-on (Elite 20K) and a checked bag (Elite 100K) on your flight for free.
In addition to a personal item, Frontier Airlines will not charge you for bringing the following items in your flight: essential baby items, such as diaper bags, strollers – only when traveling with an infant; car seats and child harnesses (Frontier approved and with air travel-approved labels from the DOT); medical devices, such as medication, needles, syringes, breast pumps, CPAP machines, ventilators, and respirators; approved brands of oxygen concentrators and battery-powered POCs; and nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH)-powered Segways as assistive devices.
How much will you pay for baggage?
In addition to a personal item, you can also bring carry-ons, checked bags, and other baggage on board for extra dollars. Carry-on bags, such as small duffel bags, large backpacks, and small suitcases or wheeled bags, should be within the 24" x 16" x 10" size, weigh less than 35 pounds, and fit inside the overhead compartment or under the seat. Checked bags, including large duffel bags and suitcases, should be no larger than 62 linear inches and weigh less than 40 pounds. Frontier Airlines will charge extra for an overweight bag ($50-$100 per bag, per direction) and a separate fee for an oversized bag ($75 per bag, per direction). The airline will not accept checked bags measuring more than 110 linear inches or weighing over 100 pounds.
If you're transporting antlers, you'll need to pay $100, $75 for non-motorized touring or racing bicycles not more than 109 linear inches or over 99.9 pounds, and $75 for certain live animals. Prices of other baggage items will be based on the Fare Option you purchased for your flight.
